Passengers travelling to and through Manchester Piccadilly station should be aware that more major upgrading works are planned for March 2026, causing disruption to train services and station closures.
Network Rail has plans for a major upgrade of the tracks, points and signalling systems of the southern approach to Manchester Piccadilly station. The work, which is costing £7.9 million, is critical and will make services more reliable for passengers. For context, there were 35 faults on this stretch of tracks during 2024.
The bulk of the work was completed during February, but there will be some additional closures to allow for further work in March. To complete these works, Manchester Piccadilly will be closed to trains from the south and east on Sunday 1 March until 1pm and Sunday 22 March until 1pm.
Platforms 13 and 14 will remain open for trains running on a reduced timetable to:
- Liverpool Lime Street via Eccles and Earlestown
- Blackpool North via Bolton
- Chester via Earlestown (Sundays only – this is a Transport for Wales service)
The station facilities will also stay open, including the ticket office, Passenger Assist lounge, toilets, retail outlets and Metrolink services.
