In the early years of the 20th century, those toiling in Sheffield’s steel works and Manchester’s cotton mills would escape their polluted homes on their days off to enjoy the clean air and beauty of the Peak District. They travelled by train on the Hope Valley line, a rail connection that still provide the link between metropolis and stunning natural splendor today.
The Steel Cotton Rail Trail project has been created and is being supported by the High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, featuring content from the South East Manchester Community Rail Partnership. Use the link below to access a series of guides that will help you thread your way along the Steel Cotton Rail Trail across the Peak District.
Walk over hills and down into the lush sweep of the Hope Valley, along canals and through woodland. This Trail is a chance to explore our area’s industrial past, heritage and natural beauty.
Do as much or a little as you like of the Trail. There are plenty of stations along the way to catch the train home as and when you need to.
