The Friends of Mauldeth Road Station (FoMRS) were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor to the station at the end of November to launch the new artwork that nestles on two sides of the station bridge.
The Lord Mayor of the City of Manchester, Councillor Carmine Grimshaw, was joined by the artist who created the work – Caroline Coates – to officiate. They were accompanied by two local MPs and three local councillors.
In a brief address, the Lord Mayor commended the project as an example of achievement through partnership working. The gathering was hosted by FoMRS with their partners from Northern and Network Rail.
Brightening through nature
The artwork was commissioned by the FoMRS as part of their longer-term plans to keep improving the station environment. They knew of Caroline, the artist, as they were aware of the work she had produced for Stockport Station. Her work is often inspired by nature, which chimed with the desire of the FoMRS to incorporate and celebrate nature as much as possible.
The artwork was funded by CrossCountry Trains and the Crewe to Manchester Community Rail Partnership. The artwork panels themselves, once completed by Caroline Coates, were installed by The Sign Bridge and celebrate local wildlife. Why not go and see the new artwork for yourself?
Future plans
The new artwork is the latest projects for the group as they strive to make the station environment bright and pleasant, using nature as a theme. Recently, the FoMRS added new planters around the station area and there are plans to create some new panels that share useful maps of the local area.
