Safe Travel

Being safe is a priority for everyone working on the railways and it should be one of your priorities to.

Travel by rail is statistically the safest mode of transport in the UK. As a traveler there are a few simple things that you can do to maintain your own personal safety.

Plan your journey: know your route and stops, if travelling late know the times of the last train (and connecting busses if required), tell someone your plans and if arriving in a strange location try and arrange to be met by someone.

On the station: be aware of your surroundings, stay in sight of CCTV, stay in busy places where possible and avoid using headphones.

During the journey: Avoid empty carriages sit with other people, take notice of where the guard is on the train and report any suspicious or threatening behavior whether it is directed at you or someone else.

In an emergency: you should dial 999.

For less urgent issues, a more discrete approach is to text the British Transport Police using 61016. This number is monitored. Texting means you won’t be over heard and is a very common activity and unlikely to bring you to the attention of others.
